GRIDFLIP Basic

This generator makes standardized characters for OSR or Basic D&D games. The assumption is you want a stable of pregens or NPCs with acceptable, typical scores, at any permissible level. There are a few deviations from the book rules meant to make it more useful as such a tool.:

• Ability Scores: uses the balanced 9-roll GRIDFLIP variant that gives scores from 3-18, then adds 8 to the lowest score. This gives an Ability Score total of 71 points, average of 11.8 each.
• Hit Points: Maximum at 1st Level, then half+1 until name level. Similar to the apocryphal "Greyhawk minimum."
• Magical Gear: based on representative characters. Magical gear is broadly described in pluses or type (potions or scrolls). It is up to you to customize past that point.

The ability scores it outputs are based on an analysis of over a hundred characters from the B-series of adventure modules, shown HERE. Stats that were traditionally disfavored or favored are nudged by disallowing them as the maximum or minimum, respectively. For example, a Fighter can still get a low Strength, but it will not be their lowest stat.

This is also a no-frills thing, not a pretty character sheet. The assumption is you will write this all down on a regular character sheet of your choice.

Because Old School Essentials is so popular ( I like it anyway), some of the output is compatible. For example, the THACO as a bonus option in brackets [].

If you do not like these modifications and feel compelled to tell me all about how hard core you are; there are at least a dozen generators out there that do it by the book. Go bother them.
